AAUW New York State Annual Meeting in Albany, NY
This summer I was selected to be a part of AAUW NYC Metro's Rising Leaders Internship Program. As part of the program, I went to Albany for the AAUW New York State annual meeting.
The event was full of amazing speakers, but the one who stuck with me most was Kelli Nicholas Owens, who leads the state’s Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. Ms Owens spoke about technology-facilitated abuse. She said it can start as early as third grade. One of the members had brought her eight-year-old daughter, and the room went very quiet. After the event, I wrote a policy memo on the subject which you can read on AAUW NYC Metro's website here.
We also heard from Dr. William Murphy, Deputy Commissioner for Higher Education at the NYS Education Department. Bill talked about how the state is working to increase numbers of people in higher education and to decrease the number of gaps of underrepresented groups. His talk reinforced how important literacy and access to education are for true civic engagement.
